Covid-19 has taken over everything that we ever knew. Changing our lifestyles, consumption habits, and even attitudes. I for one have become a homebody. Gone are the days of leisure travel (at least for now) and dining out due to lockdown restrictions.

Everybody and anybody are all stuck at home, old, not so old, and children, all under one roof. Time to time, I hear horror stories from friends and family who had to work-from-home while managing their young ones. Even when school's not out, home-based learning seems to be the norm now as we shift back and forth 'lockdown' situations whenever a new wave of cases surge through the country. Although the pandemic is coming to its 2 year anniversary mark, I doubt we will ever get used it. It is also further compounded by its ever growing mutations, the latest of which - The Delta Variant.

But there's one good thing in my life that's unchanging and that's coffee. With everyone being home almost 24/7, the little ones must have realised or observed a thing or 2 more than usual about your daily morning habits. They may even start to ask about the smell, taste, to helping you prepare your coffee. The phrase "monkey see, monkey do" rings truer than ever in my house.🙈 While it is still a controversial topic on how young is young to start consuming coffee, I personally think that it is never too early to start them on the discovery of this magic bean. When you are at a café you can start with a babyccino or hot chocolate, and as they grow older, maybe a sip or 2 of your mocha? It is also okay if you are totally against it, as there are probably a 101 ways to use or incorporate coffee into activities that you can use bridge this gap.

But for today, I've curated a list of the top 5 most exciting discovery activities (in my opinion) suitable for a range of ages. One is never too young (or old!) to start playing with coffee 😂 There are also activities that even the older ones will enjoy! I mean... will you ever see your vampire teenagers for prolonged periods of time if not for this pandemic?

There's always room for deserts or so goes the saying! Coffee can also be pleasing to children when it is not in its bitter forms that adults usually enjoy. What better way to your loved one's heart than through their stomachs? 😋

Famous coffee flavoured deserts include Tiramisu and Opera Cake. And I am sure that your local ice cream stores also carry coffee flavoured products.

Alternatively, if you're lazy (like me), there are plenty of coffee flavoured options out there. You don't need to look further than café Sinouk's menu! They carry a generous spread of coffee flavoured (real coffee flavour!) and complimentary treats.

Pst! Did you know that you can preorder whole Opera and Tiramisu cakes from Café Sinouk? You have just unlocked a secret menu item, you are welcome 😎

This will be a fun project with your girls as you enjoy a relaxing spa day at home with this homemade remedy. Scrubs made from coffee have many benefits that will leave your skin feeling happy and glowing as you remove dead skin cells that clog your pores. I read that the caffeine in coffee could also help battle the appearance of cellulite!

Here's what you will need
1/2 cup used coffee grounds
1/4 cup oils that are nourishing (e.g. coconut, olive, almond, jojoba)
1/4 cup sugar

Instructions
1. Mix all the ingredients together and store in an airtight container
2. Use within 2 weeks

I recommend using the scrub first thing in the shower as it will leave a slight residue that you will want to rinse off with some soap.

If you are using as a facial product, test a small amount near at your neck area before proceeding to use. Scrub gently as the grounds are coarser compared to normal facial products. If you're acne prone, I don't recommend using coconut oil, as it might be too rich.

Taking away the pleasure of smelling the lingering scent of grounded beans and brewed coffee. To bring this simple pleasure back, try making some scented candles with your kids to freshen up the house!

Your kids (young or old) would definitely find this project fun and exciting!

Here's what you will need
Upcycled mugs/candle containers
Candle wicks
Candle wax (preferably soy, but others work just as good)
1-2 tbsp Coffee Grounds (Used or new, but both has to be dry!)
Saucepan (that you're willing to throw or use for crafting only)
Funnel
Chopsticks

Instructions
1. Melt enough wax to fill your candle container almost all the way to the brim using the saucepan over medium heat.
2. While the wax is melting, position the candle wick to the middle of your candle container. You can use superglue to secure it to the bottom of the jar.
3. Once wax is melted, take the wax off the heat and stir in the coffee grounds.
4. Pour the wax into the candle container using the funnel.
5. Quickly adjust the wick before the wax hardens, ensuring that the wick is at the bottom of the candle container.

Lastly, another aromatic sensory toy is to incorporate coffee and playdough together. I'm reminiscent of my childhood play sets that would always have playdough involved.

Nowadays I find that these toys are way too expensive and that I am just paying for brands sometimes. But i'm also weary of smaller brands as I'm not sure what these doughs are made of.😔 Instead of being a worrywart, why not make some on my own?

Here's what you will need
1 cup flour
½ cup salt
1 cup used coffee grounds
½ cup water (might need more, depends!)

Instructions
1. In a large mixing bowl combine the flour and salt.
2. Add in the coffee grounds and mix well.
3. Gradually add in the water. You might not need all, stop or add until your desired consistency. (If you accidentally added too much water, add more flour)
4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it together until it becomes similar to playdough consistency. (Don't expect it to be 100% like store bought playdough)
5. Have fun and keep it in an airtight container when not in use. (Keeps for a 3 weeks or more based on your discrepency)

How many of you look at your phones right after you wake up? I’m guilty of that. However, It is a bad habit that affects your mood and productivity, and does not fit into your morning routine. You never know what kind of news you find on your phone, such as messages, and it is best to look at them after you’ve prepared your mind and body properly.

One of the best activities to do right after you wake up (besides hydration) is meditation. Meditation is to the mind, what exercise is to the body. Understandably, it is a difficult exercise. But it can be done with other activities, for example, in preparing a cup of coffee. This helps you to set up a morning routine.

Why even have morning routine?

Well, habitually doing repetitive activities that bring you comfort, help you get geared up for the day. It prepares you physically, mentally, and most importantly, emotionally for the challenges that lay ahead in the day. Routines give you to the confidence to handle tasks that are new. Preparing (or even buying, as we’ll explore later) and consuming coffee famously fits into the routine and is a beloved part of many people’s morning routine.

We hope that this article will give you a general idea of how to incorporate coffee into your food, and more importantly, entice you to try it! Let the flavour of coffee melt your tastebuds and the aroma of coffee soothe your nose, as you get your mid-day break, or as you settle down after the day. Without further ado, here is the list!

But why should coffee be included in your morning routine in the first place? Why drink coffee anyway? I will share with you 6 reasons…

1) Waking you up and getting ready for the day. The caffeine in coffee is a stimulant that acts to block out sleepiness. This way, you can focus on your tasks for the day and stay alert, without being distracted by the need to sleep, or dozing. Check out our other article for the best time to drink coffee !

2)	If you do not like to eat a lot in the morning but want to keep full, latte and cappuccino are for you (instead of going for Espresso or Long Black Americano)! The milk and syrup of your choice that you add into the coffee will keep you full till the afternoon.

3)	Socialisation is a key part of life for people, and Coffee helps to facilitate that. If you are not into having coffee at home, or if the timing prevents you from having coffee at home, you can have it outside or at work with friends and colleagues. It serves as a point of socialisation. You can even bring your homemade coffee outside and share with others! Since coffee helps you to keep alert, you will be able to socialise better.

4)	Take a break away from the office setting. You can pair Coffee up with work meetings by having the meeting at a café. Change in locations can help to promote creativity. Our cafes are designed to offer you a particular experience, and each of them serve a different purpose.

5)	Coffee consumption also offers a variety of benefits to both your physical and mental health. For instance, it helps to reduce the risk of liver problems, as well as provide antioxidants to your body. It also reduces the chance of depression Not only does coffee provide short term benefits, it also provides long term benefits. Indeed, many of them are benefits of long term coffee consumption.

6)	However most importantly, preparing or drinking Coffee can be a form of therapy. As we mentioned earlier, it is meditative to prepare your own cup of coffee. This is especially if you hand-grind your coffee bean! The key is to focus on making the coffee, using each of your five senses. Focus your eyes on what you are doing, feel your hand as you perform each task, take in the aroma of the coffee, listen to the sounds such as grinding, and finally, feel the coffee on your tongue as you drink it. This is easier said than done. As your mind will be easily distracted, you have to gently remind yourself to focus on the current experience. This is also a practice of focusing on the present, which is a better way of living than living in the past or future.

Even if you don’t like coffee in the morning, you can have it in the early afternoon! The post-lunch fatigue can be crushing, but you can mitigate that by drinking Coffee. Just don’t drink it too late, as you might find yourself unable to sleep at night!

So, there are many reasons to drink coffee. But, what is the case for preparing rather than buying that nice hot cup of coffee? After all, making it is not so easy!

The case for this is simple. People value the things they create by their own hands, that is, personally. Also, you will have a chance to experiment with different brews! It is a great thing to be able to finally perfect your brewing technique and be able to taste the difference, all the result of your own careful learning, concentration and hard work! We offer a variety of roasts for you to experiment with.

So what if your coffee-making skill is poor?

Not to worry! Practice makes perfect. Sinouk Coffee offers barista classes for you to try, and even learn latte art (brew coffee with beautiful designs) !

}
  .paragraph1 {
    font-size: 17px;

<span class="paragraph1"
If you are still not keen on making coffee by yourself, you can always grab your hot cup of coffee from our Cafes.

Last but not least. You can make Coffee for others in your household and feel better for making an impact on others’ lives. Essentially, you feel more generous, and sociable.

All of these actions help to shift your mood into positive mode for the day.

But we all have those mornings when we’re in a rush. Can you still make coffee in a rush?

Don’t worry, Nespresso capsules exist (Sinouk Coffee happens to carry them and the Coffee maker 😊)

If you have a dripper such as a V60, Lao Typica is great, with a very smooth and fruity taste.

So there you go, all the reasons to have coffee in your morning routine (or even throughout your day 😊). Start experimenting now! The earlier you start the more you will enjoy it!

One of the steps in Coffee Production is coffee processing. The 3 main Coffee Processing methods are Natural, Honey, and Washed.

In this article, we will review one of the processing methods known as Honey-Processing method.

But first, you need to know the anatomy of coffee cherries. Have you ever looked at the anatomy of coffee cherry or even held one in your hands before?

<span class="paragraph1"
The figure above shows the anatomy of a coffee cherry, note the Mucilage, which is the 3rd layer. Observe how many layers consist of the coffee cherry! Each of them is important in processing.

Why the name ‘Honey-Processing’?

‘Honey’ refers to the Mucilage (Sweet Coating), which covers the beans in the Coffee Cherry.

In ‘Honey’ Processing, the skin and pulp of the cherry are removed, leaving the mucilage, or ‘Honey’, to dry along with the beans within.

Hence the name, ‘Honey’ Processing

Alright you know the anatomy and how the name of Honey Processing comes about…but

How does it differ from the other processing methods?

Honey processing involves steps from both Washed and Natural processing, resulting in a unique taste. Refer to the flowchart below for a brief overview for each process!

<span class="paragraph1"
In both Washed & Honey processing, the first step involves Removing skin & pulp. The second step for Honey processing is drying, which is also done for Natural processing.

But that’s not all, there are actually a few variants for Honey Processing. What do the variants mean? Read on for more details!

Variants of Honey processing

There are 3 variants of Honey processing that produce 3 variants of coffee beans: Yellow, Red, and Black.

  .paragraph1 {
    font-size: 17px;

  }

<span class="paragraph1"
The first variant, Yellow Honey is derived by leaving the coffee beans to dry uncovered, for a week. This produces light bodied, floral and fruity coffee. We use Yellow Honey in our
coffee!

Red Honey is obtained through the same process but longer, by a week. This results in sweet and syrupy tones in the coffee.

Black Honey is acquired by leaving the beans to dry covered, for a 2 to 3 weeks. The beans produce full-bodied, sweet and fruity coffee.

How do these variety of beans fit into the larger picture of processed coffee beans? See the picture below for easy identification.

Colours of Coffee Beans

<span class="paragraph1"
Natural processing produces dark coffee beans, and then you have the different variants of honey processing. Finally, washed processing produces green coffee beans.

Alright, we know how the processing works and of the variants, but what does this all mean for the customer? What are the characteristics of the coffee that has gone through Honey Processing?

Why Honey Processing?

Coffee confers benefits upon both our physical health and mental health. In this blogpost, we will look at an overview of these benefits.
However, most of the findings are only associations while some have cause and effect relationships. Note that this is not a recommendation for you to necessarily start increasing your daily coffee consumption, especially in a drastic manner. That may result in adverse health effects.

So, how does coffee affect health?

Improve brain function
You probably know that Coffee contains Caffeine, a psychoactive substance. But do you know how it helps to energise you?

When you drink Coffee, Caffeine travels to your brain via the bloodstream. It blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine. This leads to an increase of other neurotransmitters including norepinephrine and dopamine. The neurons fire faster, enhancing brain function.

Not only do you gain elevated energy levels, but your mood is boosted, along with memory, vigilance and reaction timings. [1]

Additionally, the European Food Safety Authority established a cause and effect relationship between heightened alertness and attention and caffeine in a regular cup of coffee. [8]

You can stay alert at work, or while having a cold, and managing family, household and other errands. Also, you don’t have to worry about forgetting things. Beat the tiredness with Coffee! (Please don’t drink too much, it will reduce effectiveness).

Burn fats
Concerned about your weight and how your appearance? Caffeine is a natural fat-burner. As before, this process starts in the brain, with caffeine.

The brain increases the amount of a hormone, epinephrine (adrenaline) in the blood. This indicates to the fat tissues that they should release fatty acids into the blood (also used as fuel for strenuous physical activity, more on that later).

Obviously, you have to be losing more calories than you consume, by either eating less or exercising more. But don’t fret too much about that because coffee also helps to boost fat-burning by increasing the metabolic rate. Read on.

Increase Metabolism
‘Resting Metabolic Rate’ (RMR) refers to the rate at which the body burns calories at rest.

This means that with a higher RMR, you can eat more and lose weight easier.

Caffeine boosts RMR so it will be easier for you to lose weight with coffee; Double the benefits! [2]

Enhance Physical Performance
Adrenaline not only helps to burn fat, but it is also the fight-or-flight hormone that readies the body for extreme physical activity. The fatty acids which are broken from fat tissue are used as fuel to boost physical activity.

Next time you are about to do some intense physical activity like running, weightlifting or dancing, drink coffee to get better performance, while also boosting your calorie-burning! [1]

Gain Essential Nutrients
Coffee also contains various essential nutrients for the body, including Vitamin B2, B5, Manganese and Potassium, Magnesium and Niacin. It is also packed with myriads of antioxidants, which fight unstable molecules in the body. This protects against aging and ailments such as cancer, as well as lift our mood. This is impactful for mental health, which leads us to the next point.

[1][3][4]

Reduce risk of Clinical depression
Drinking coffee may help to prevent clinical depression, a critical mental disorder that destroys lives. Additionally, drinking 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day may also drastically decrease the risk of suicide.
[1][9]

This is because caffeine may be a mild antidepressant that increases the levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline.
[11]

It also helps you to smile, which is a step toward living a more fulfilled life!

Reduce risk of Neurodegenerative diseases
Related to mental health and a fulfilled life, routine coffee consumption also helps to reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons. These diseases particularly affect the elderly, hence drinking coffee from young is a good way to protect against such ailments. The most common is Alzheimers, and it contributes significantly to dementia.

[8][9][10]

Protect Organ function
Besides the brain, drinking coffee also confers benefits on other organs of the body such as the liver. However, coffee consumption must average at three cups per day.

Besides the liver, it is suggested that the cardiovascular system also gains benefits from coffee consumption.
Coffee consumption is also associated with a greatly reduced risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Indeed, it is even associated with living longer, especially for those suffering from Type 2 Diabetes.

[3][5]

While we want to live longer, we also want to live it well. A morning routine is key to many people’s health and success and you can adopt that too! Start it off with something as simple as coffee. If you think that is not a big deal, read on to find out how you can beat two birds with one stone. Get your day going with positivity and productivity with the following lifehacks!

Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness helps us to be aware, alert and not let the stress in our lives overwhelm us. Many of us go by our days without being mindful at all, allowing our minds to wander with the worries of life. Mindfulness meditation (yes, it is a kind of meditation) is a habit. And you can let coffee aid you in building the habit!

<a href="https://medium.com/thrive-global/https-medium-com-thewellco-mindful-coffee-6940f9479a3" target=blank">In just under 4 minutes, learn how to practice mindfulness meditation with coffee preparation and consumption. For example, many of us just note the smell of the coffee, without noticing it. To get into the habit of being mindful, notice how the smell of the coffee permeates your nasal sense! Indeed, the process of being mindful should start when we see the coffee packaging itself!

At Sinouk Coffee, we designed <a href="http://sinouk-coffee.com/locations/"target=blank">elegant Cafes and <a href="http://sinouk-coffee.com/shop/"target=blank">premium packaging that will be useful for mindfulness meditation!

Gratefulness and Relationship building
Coffee also helps us to be grateful and have healthier relationships, both of which are critical for a healthy life. While making coffee in the morning, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.sg/my-morning-routine-includes-one-simple-gesture-to-make-my-partner-happy-2019-3?r=US&IR=T"target=blank">this coffee lover decided to make one for their partner too. One is happy to give, while the other is happy to receive. They can also sit down and check in with each other, which kicks off they day to an amazing start. Gratefulness can be celebrated in this moment of bonding over coffee!

<a href="https://www.nespresso.com/pro/au/en/news-quality-morning-coffee-to-start-your-day_"target=blank">A manager uses the moment of drinking coffee to “reflect on the days’ goals and priorities”. They also added that coffee helps to begin conversations in the office and enable colleagues to bond. Connections in the workplace help to reduce stress, which means that the immune system is not overburdened.

That was a very long list on the overview of the benefits of coffee and we hope you learned something new! Perhaps you would like to start including coffee in your morning routine, or diet?

And working is inevitably one of them. Do you need productive working spaces?

Walk into any coffee shop in town and you’re bound to see a couple of people working on their laptops. If you’ve never been one of those people, I’m sure you’re wondering why they do it. There are tons of articles on the web explaining the café-office phenomenon, but this blogpost isn’t going to try and cover it all.

What it is going to do, however, is help you decide which cafés best suit the nature of your work and lifestyle. Sinouk Coffee has seven coffee shops throughout Vientiane, 10 including our franchises, so you’re bound to find the perfect coffice for your needs.

1. The Cubicle Resident
We acknowledge that the bulk of our customers are trapped in stifling cubicles, constantly disrupted by beeping printers, perpetually unanswered phone calls and every breath, cough, sneeze and sniffle of everyone around.

Well, we say you deserve a working environment that helps you hit that impossible sales target or bulldoze through spreadsheet after spreadsheet. Heck, you might just need a place to churn out three whole articles for your corporate blog in less than 24 hours (totally not speaking from experience).

If you feel a spiritual connection with everything I’ve just described, you need an environment that is open and spacious, with big, bright windows that open up to lush greenery to calm you down when you realise yet another deadline has been creeping up on you.

Lucky for you, that is the exact environment we have at Sinouk Coffee Pavilion. Being a little out of the city might be inconvenient, but the occasional escape from the cubicle farm that is your office might do your productivity some good!

TL;DR – for the office worker who needs a change of environment, try Sinouk Coffee Pavilion.

2. The Deal Closer
Things are going great for you—you’ve got clients everywhere waiting to sign contracts but you realise there’s no space to host them. An air-conditioned café with good Wi-Fi is your best bet, but choosing one is trickier than that.

The space must be professional; bustling but not busy, and of course, with respectable yet affordable coffee which makes paying for drinks a lot easier on your wallet. Finally, you want to choose a place that’s centrally located but far enough from the tourist districts to keep your environment conducive for negotiations.

If the above description is the kind of coffice you’re looking for, pay a visit to Café Sinouk Phonsinuane. It’s a double-storied, fully serviced café-restaurant that can host both casual meetings to serious contract negotiations. Even better, if you’re hosting a meeting with four or more people, there’s a meeting room equipped with a screen and projector on the second floor.

Who knows, your boss might decide to make this café your new office!

TL;DR – for the overachieving salesman with too many meetings, try Café Sinouk Phonsinuane.

3. The Hip Artist
Need to revise draft number 23 of a poster design for your client’s dog’s 6th birthday party? Squeeze out new campaign ideas for a new line of dish soaps? At Café Sinouk Khemkong, creativity flows just as smoothly as the freshly brewed coffee from our machines.

For creatives, you need large open windows that you can stare dazedly out of as you work out colour combinations, storylines and concept art in your head. Don’t be afraid of buzzing downtown cafes, as the hustle and bustle is exactly what you need to keep those creative juices flowing.

With tourists of more nationalities than you can count, youths with their fancy cameras and stylish outfits, businessmen and their cigarettes on the terrace, you’ll never spend the same day twice.

TL;DR – for the creative who needs to get out of a rut, try Café Sinouk Khemkong

4. The Marathon Mom
I’m sure we all agree a mother’s work is one of the hardest out there. The distance mothers cover in a day’s work will surprise you—from dropping off the kids at school, getting to work, picking the kids up, paying the nanny, grocery shopping and the list goes on.

In the rare and valuable spare time that mothers do have, having a café near the kids’ school is almost akin to an oasis in the desert. It’s where you can stop to rest your legs, check your receipts, count your change and get some office work done while you’re at it.

At Sinouk Coffee, we know how precious time is, and we don’t want you spending it at the wrong place. Café Sinouk Sokpaluang is equipped with a kid’s zone to keep your children entertained while you sort out your own needs. It’s also a good place to meet up with your friends over a quick coffee before zipping off to run your next errand.

TL;DR – for mothers who wish they had a body double, try Café Sinouk Sokpaluang

5. The Posh Connoisseur
We say “connoisseur”, but you don’t really have to be an expert at anything. After all, being posh is about pretending that you know things (we’re only half-joking).

It’s easy to waste the weekend away after a long and tiring week at work or school. For those who want to get productive on lazy days, a quiet, open-aired café works better than a bustling, enclosed space which might distract or add unnecessary stress on you to get more work done than you have to.

Café Sinouk Institut Francais (IFL) is the perfect place to open up your morning paper, sip on an espresso and get some light work done like replying emails and quick readings. The open space and small garden bring in fresh air that keeps you productive but not constantly on the edge of your seat. It’s the weekend after all, and you deserve a break!

TL;DR – for the early risers who want to get light work out of the way, try Café Sinouk IFL

As majority of working adults can relate, getting a cup of hot coffee is probably the first thing
you check off your daily to-do list. But if you find yourself having trouble feeling the full
caffeine kick from your morning coffee, it might be because you’re drinking it at the wrong
time. So when is the best time to drink coffee? Read on and find out.

It turns out that the moment we wake up, our body starts releasing cortisol (stress
hormones) which helps us feel awake and alert in the morning. The addition of caffeine to
our already lifted cortisol levels increases our body tolerance towards caffeine.

The regular intake of caffeine just after we wake up can interfere and reduce our cortisol production,
resulting in a premature caffeine crash or worse, increase your reliance on drinking more
coffee to stay awake throughout the day.

So, no coffee in the morning? No, but just at the right timing.

Stress hormones are typically produced in the highest quantities at three points throughout
the day: 8 to 9 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 5 to 6 PM. Avoiding caffeine during these points will
maximize both the body’s natural way of keeping you awake, and the extra boost which you
get from your coffee. This keeps you from the unnecessary intake of caffeine (and thus
reduce chances of over-reliance) and allow your body’s hormones to do its job.

But if you find that you really need the extra boost, especially after a late night and little
sleep, drink your coffee after those three timings. This will allow the caffeine to take its full
effect and help you sail through your working day smoothly.
